WHO ‘WE’ ARE
Please allow me to introduce myself. My passion for this profession has grown over the decades because of the people I’ve worked with. As a young industrial hygienist, I observed that it didn’t matter how much benzene someone might have been exposed to if they were suddenly struck and killed by a forklift or fell to their death. As important as health is, good safety is the foundation. Since that time, the scope of the profession has grown greatly. With today’s focus on environmental compliance and increasing investor interest in Sustainability metrics, EHS professionals are now indirectly responsible for protecting the employees’ jobs in addition to the employees themselves. I take a risk/value-based approach, focus on technical proficiency and standard methods, and work to ensure that my clients get prompt, credible customer service and documentation to protect their interests.
Employment Experience
Prior to founding Hopf EHS Services, LLC, Mr. Hopf served as the Director of EHS for the Mission Technologies division of Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII), where he was employed for over 20 years. There, he was responsible for the EHS and Sustainability programs covering nearly 350 locations worldwide. Prior to HII, Mr. Hopf was the Associate Director, SHE at Ionis Pharmaceuticals, the Principal Industrial Hygienist for Callaway Golf Company, and a Safety Engineer for the Union-Tribune Publishing Company.
Consulting Experience
Mr. Hopf has performed consulting services for clients in the manufacturing, retail and communications industry. These activities included industrial hygiene, comprehensive site inspections, training program evaluations, and Safety Management System assessments.
Mr. Hopf has performed all types of industrial hygiene monitoring to include air sampling, surface and dermal wiping, noise and radiation monitoring. He has extensive experience in the assessment and design of ventilation (wet and dry systems). His written reports and recommended hazard controls have been praised by insurance professionals as ‘comprehensive, simple and conclusive.’
Education & Certification
Mr. Hopf’s degrees include a Master of Science Public Health (MSPH), Industrial Hygiene and a Bachelor of Science (BS), Biology. Both degrees are from San Diego State University.
He has been a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) since 2002 (No. 8269CP), and a Certified Safety Professional since 2007 (CSP-20085).
Awards and Recognition
In 2019, Mr. Hopf was recognized by the Norfolk, Virginia Fed-OSHA Area Director, Stan Dutko, for his safety volunteer work through the Virginia Ship Repair Association. Also recognized were Jay Prock, President of Tidewater Staffing, and James Sammons, Signal Insurance (now retired). The trio had implemented a program to provide free comprehensive EHS audits to member companies wishing to participate. This helped small businesses to achieve compliance and further their existing EHS programs.
